Kip's Tips 6/8/2015

You haven't heard from your revenue officer in a while. Should you contact them or do you let the sleeping dog lie?

What I have learned in my 14 years of practicing before the IRS is that the answer depends on a lot of different factors, which I would be happy to discuss with you individually. However, if you are trying to assess the situation yourself the two biggest factors are: Compliance (all returns are filed, you are paying your taxes on time and in full); and whether or not you are safe from enforced collection action. If you are not current or you don't know if you're safe from enforcement then you need to stay in contact with your revenue officer. What you don't know could hurt you and/or your business.

That being said, I will tell you what I would tell a family member: If you or your business owes money to the IRS, the state or the city, it is a legal matter and as such you should not be talking directly with the Revenue Officer.  The revenue officer, no matter how sweet, is there to collect as much money as possible by whatever means possible.  Call an attorney, know your rights and your options. You'll save money and sleep better at night.
